BRAIN DRAIN

Adrian Newey regarded as the best aerodynamicist / designer of race cars is to step down because of frustrations with the restrictive nature of Formula 1’s rules.

Engineers like Newey require a degree of freedom to stimulate their creative and technical brains to bring innovative, winning designs.

This is a problem for all governing bodies of sport.

The dilemma for golf is that the vast majority of golfers would benefit in terms of extra performance and enjoyment of the game if golf equipment rules were relaxed. All of today’s equipment can reach the maximum permitted levels for the main performance parameters. At the same time professional golfers need to be restricted from hitting the ball further.

Will overly restricted sport rules create a brain drain where leading engineers seek new pastures?
